CLAUDETTE CARON, pianist

Picture
Pianist Claudette Caron was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ms. Caron earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance at the University of Manitoba where she studied under noted pedagogue Alma Brock-Smith, both as a soloist and with duo-partner Paulette Price. Under Professor Brock-Smith's tutelage, the Caron/Price Duo gained national recognition as a team, winning the Western Canadian Young Artists Competition and 1st place in the Ensemble Division of the Canadian Music Competition. The Caron/Price Duo also participated in the prestigious Radio Munich International Competition and were finalists and prize recipients in the Royal Overseas League Competition in London, England. Further duo studies were with Phyllis Sellick of the Royal College of Music (London).

Ms. Caron continued piano studies with Professor Robin Harrison of the University of Saskatchewan, earning her Licentiate Diploma in Performance from the Trinity College of Music (London) under his guidance. Ms. Caron attributes her passion for the keyboard Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti and Spanish music to her years of study with Professor Harrison. Ms. Caron has a strong commitment to Canadian contemporary music and has premiered, recorded and edited for publication several works by western Canadian composer David F. Dahlgren.

Ms. Caron, along with flutist Robert Ford, performed as the Ford/Caron Flute and Piano Duo from 1990 to 2010. The duo released a CD of the works by composer Sigfried Karg-Elert in 2000 and in 2003 premiered a commissioned Trio by Kenneth Nichols.

Ms. Caron currently teaches from her home studio in Winnipeg. Her students have won scholarships and awards at the local and provincial levels and excelled at post-secondary study at universities in Canada and the United States.

Since 2006, Ms. Caron has offered a highly successful  two-week summer concerto/ensemble session. Much in demand as an adjudicator and clinician, Ms. Caron has adjudicated music festivals and competitions across western Canada and Ontario. Recent engagements as an adjudicator have included the Calgary Contemporary Showcase in 2012; the 2012 and 2020 Saskatchewan Music Teachers' Association Florence Bowles Bi-Annual Scholarship Competition; the 2013, 2015 and 2017 Winnipeg Music Festival; the 2014 Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festival; and the 2017 Saskatoon Music Festival. She has recently served as a clinician at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and  the University of Manitoba Preparatory Division, and was a guest lecturer in pedagogy at Brandon University School of Music in 2011 and 2012. She is also a Senior Examiner with the Royal Conservatory of Music's College of Examiners.

Ms. Caron is a Past President of the Brandon Registered Music Teachers Association and served for many years as a board member with the Brandon Festival of the Arts.  She currently teaches in Winnipeg and  continues to be active with community cultural organizations including the Winnipeg Music Festival and the Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals.
